About Matthew Wharton
Matthew Wharton was born and raised in Green River, Wyoming, and graduated from Green River High School in 2001. Shortly after graduation, in August of 2001, Matthew enlisted in the United States Army as an infantry soldier and served for four years.
After completing his military service, Matthew returned home to Sweetwater County, where he met his future wife, Jennifer. In July of 2005, Matthew began his law enforcement career with the Rock Springs Police Department, where he worked as a detention officer.
The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office later hired Matthew as a detention deputy. After serving in detention, Matthew applied for and was selected for a patrol deputy position in the Operations Division. Matthew worked patrol from 2007 to 2016.
In 2016, Matthew was assigned to the Detective Division, where he began investigating a wide range of general criminal cases. In 2019, Matthew became affiliated with the Wyoming Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. From 2019 to the present, Matthew has continued working on general investigations, including cases ranging from homicide to theft, while also investigating child exploitation cases through his work with the task force.
In addition to his law enforcement experience, Matthew is currently enrolled through Penn State World Campus, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity Analytics. The continued education reflects his commitment to staying current with modern technology, digital evidence, cyber-related investigations, and the evolving challenges facing law enforcement today.

Began law enforcement career working in detention and obtained detention officer certification at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy.
Continued serving in detention with the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, gaining experience in jail operations, inmate supervision, and public safety procedures.
Served in the Operations Division responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, and working directly with the public throughout Sweetwater County.
Assigned to the Detective Division, investigating serious and complex cases involving victims, digital evidence, search warrants, interviews, case preparation, and coordination with local, state, and federal partners.
Serves as an affiliate with the Wyoming Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, assisting with child exploitation investigations, digital evidence, search warrants, and coordination with local, state, and federal partners.
